    1. Good question. The drawings were mostly made by Raja Ravi Varma. But the idols were in existence much before Raja Ravi Varma. How those idols were made ? May be first the folk lores gave some description and later it got converted to idols.

    2. 1. What is the earliest instance you know of a specific form being given to Siva, Vishnu, etc, in Tamil literature? Did such descriptions exist in Sanskrit lit already?

      2. My problem is - How did all these guys describe gods in the same form? Why not describe them as a "bearded, 30-feet tall guy"? There are only two possible answers: (a) they saw the gods for themselves, or (b) they just followed each other and that was enough for their purposes. Which one do you believe?

    3. I do not know. About 1000 years before, there was no media, no communication net work. It is unlikely each person read the other person's works and then adopted it.

Have they seen themselves ? Hard to believe either.

      Interesting problem to solve....

    4. Obviously temples existed at that time, providing a fixed image for each god. Stories would have traveled by word of mouth. And so it all begins until everyone uses the same image.

I am not saying all these poets were fools. It is just that their purpose of introspection was served sufficiently by using the same images.

    5. Also, if our major gnani/sadhus "saw" the different forms of god, then why did they not see other gods such as Apollo or Zeus? Why should we believe that Siva and Vishnu are real, but Zeus and Apollo are not real?!

That's why I am tempted to say that all these poets, etc. used specific forms as only aids to introspection, meditation, deeper understanding of self, etc.
